A detective story often begins with a professional obligation. The more interesting question is what that obligation interrupts.

Bob Annersley is on leave to help his pregnant partner, Maryanne, as they prepare for their first child. His commander asks him to return because he believes Annersley is the right person for the case.

That detail puts a personal decision beside the central mystery. The investigation matters, but so does the life waiting outside it. Time spent following a lead is also time spent away from someone.

For a reading group, this is a useful question to carry into the story: how should a character weigh a responsibility to a community against a responsibility to the people closest to them?
